The Public Health Law Center (the former Tobacco Law Center) at William Mitchell College of Law is extremely pleased to announce that it has been asked to assist the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in analyzing and implementing the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act − historic new federal regulation to regulate tobacco products. Under a grant of $100,731 through Emory University in Atlanta, the Public Health Law Center will help the CDC, the Food and Drug Administration, and state health departments with legal issues involved in developing and defending improved tobacco control laws and programs in the new legal environment. The Center will also prepare a training curriculum and materials to educate health officials on the new law’s implications for state health policies. Center Staff Attorney Maggie Mahoney, Deputy Director of the Tobacco Control Legal Consortium, will devote half her time to the one-year project.
One of America’s leading resources for improving public health policies, the Public Health Law Center at William Mitchell College of Law also serves as home to the legal network supporting the nation’s tobacco control movement. The Center is self-supporting, funded entirely by external grants and contracts, and reimburses the College for all costs associated with its offices and overhead. Four of the Center’s eight attorneys teach courses as Adjunct Professors, and the Center is one of William Mitchell’s largest employers of student research assistants. Its research and scholarship are distributed widely through print and electronic publications, presentations, and academic journals.
